Patent License
ToloBio initially identified the efficient "trans-cleavage activity" of the CRISPR-Cas12 protein. Leveraging this discovery, the company developed the HOLMES (one-HOur Low-cost Multipurpose highly Efficient System) nucleic acid rapid detection platform. In comparison to traditional molecular diagnostic technologies, CRISPR-Cas12-based detection technologies offer notable benefits, including high sensitivity, specificity, rapidity, and convenience. These attributes have led to their recognition as "the next-generation molecular diagnostic technology" by the journal "SCIENCE". Consequently, CRISPR-based diagnostic technologies hold great promise for applications in various fields such as pathogen detection, genetic disease screening, and precision medicine.
ToloBio holds methodological patents for Cas12-based nucleic acid detection. In 2020, ToloBio entered into an agreement with Sherlock Biosciences for a "Patent Cross-licensing" collaboration on Cas12 and Cas13 diagnostic technologies in the U.S. and China. Subsequently, in November 2022, ToloBio and Sherlock Biosciences expanded their collaboration by signing a global CRISPR diagnostic "Patent Cross-licensing" agreement. This agreement granted co-exclusive rights to Cas12 and Cas13 CRISPR diagnostic methods in markets outside of the U.S. and China.
